Certified Anusara® Yoga instructor Catherine “Cat” McCarthy is a native New Orleanian and an Emmy-nominated TV&Film Producer/Director. Based in New York City since 1993 to pursue her Master’s degree in Film at NYU, Cat began her studentship of yoga under the guidance of Anusara Yoga teachers Amy Ippoliti and Elena Brower. After a decade of dedicated yoga study, she felt ready to partake in her first Teacher Training in Kripalu Yoga in 2002, followed by her Anusara Yoga Teacher Training with Amy Ippoliti in 2003, at which point Cat began to study directly with John Friend, founder of Anusara Yoga®. In 2004, she earned her Anusara Affiliated status and finally became a Certified Anusara Yoga instructor in early 2008. Steeped in the transformative and therapeutic technology of Anusara Yoga, Cat encourages students to radically affirm their vast potential with strong bodies, open hearts and playful minds.
Since August 2005, Cat has been spending much of her time in New Orleans (NOLA), serving her post-Katrina community via teaching yoga and making documentary films. Besides traveling for yoga and film work, Cat loves to sing. Her voice can be heard on the Anusara “Invocation” CD by Tala Records, as well as on Krishna Das’ “All One” CD , as a member of the Kosmic Kirtan Posse. She has achieved the 500-hour registration level with the Yoga Alliance and is a member of Kripalu Yoga Teachers Association (KYTA) and is active in the NOLA and NYC yoga communities (kulas).
Inspired daily by her students and over the years by her teachers John Friend, Amy Ippoliti, Elena Brower, and Rajanaka philosophy scholar Douglas Brooks, Cat is thrilled to share all that she has learned both on and off the mat. Thanks to the life-affirming encouragement and relentless support from her husband, family, friends and fellow yogins, Cat is helping rebuild her hometown of NOLA, one practice at a time.
